The SDSI Spring 2018 workshop explored data science for the advancement of society and business. Researchers in both industry and academia are working at the forefront of our most challenging problems with a focused interest in how this work can advance society while concurrently achieving business goals. There are many areas where these two goals are not mutually exclusive, and often, it is the application of modern data science tools and techniques that are driving the future of impact-based research. This workshop explored a set of four themes where both academic and industry researchers are working to solve real world problems while also improving and developing new methods.

Session 1: Developing the workforce of the future Moderated by Mitchell Stevens, Associate Professor, Education Advances in technology are changing the way that we learn and work together. This session explored the new data and methods that are being used to find new ways to educate people and how people may be better organized into teams that best utilize a group’s talents and strengths. Session 2: Personal sensing and autonomy Moderated by Carlos Bustamante, Professor of Biomedical Data Science and Genetics Operations Data from sensors have become a ubiquitous part of life in wearable devices, automobiles, home appliances, and more. Researchers are now able to use this data to address challenges around personal health and wellbeing, and how we interact with our surroundings. This session explored how researchers are using these data streams to better understand personal and community dynamics. Panelists:

Session 3: Data science for development Moderated by Kevin Koy, Managing Director for Data Science and AI Affiliates Programs The availability of new and higher frequency data streams (high resolution satellite images, cell phone records, etc.), along with the advent of improved deep learning methods, are allowing researchers to discover important trends in parts of the developing world that are difficult to access. This session explored how researchers are improving our ability to understand and help people in areas that are underserved. Panelists:

Session 4: AI safety Moderated by Steve Eglash, Executive Director, Strategic Research Initiatives, Computer Science As machine learning models are increasingly being used to make important and complex decisions, there is a greater need to understand and verify that the models are doing what they are intended to do. This session explored how new techniques are being developed to verify models and further the safe use of AI in society. Panelists:
