Internship Opportunites at OpenSource@Stanford
Job Description
OpenSource@Stanford – the organizational hub that coordinates, facilitates, and supports open source software activity at Stanford (especially research software) – is seeking 2 undergraduate student interns for the upcoming academic year. We are looking for enthusiastic and curious individuals who are interested in academic research, open source software, and community-driven initiatives.
Open source software powers much of the tech industry (96% of codebases include free and open source software, and open source software generates $8.8 trillion in economic value) and is fundamental to research at Stanford. In this role, you will develop skills that will serve you well, gain exposure to many exciting research projects, and help us engage with new ones. Bring your creativity and unique perspective to this job, and we will put those to good use. Open source is also an ethos, focused on building something valuable for the common good – if this sounds like you, please apply!
Typical job duties may include:
- Planning and executing practical workshops
- Testing and improving technical demos and resources
- Promoting our activities on communication channels like LinkedIn and the OpenSource@Stanford blog (which we haven’t started yet, we need you)
- Collaborating with research labs, developing open source software across campus. We engage with labs spanning AI, medicine, sustainability, neuroscience, and more.
Desirable attributes:
- Familiarity with the open source software ecosystem
- Experience with GitHub preferred, but not required
- Completion CS106A & B, or equivalent programming experience
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Collaborative, communicative, and curious!
- Bonus: contributor to an open source project somewhere
Because OpenSource@Stanford is a relatively new initiative, we imagine that this role will evolve alongside your interests. Up to 10% of your time can be allocated to "non-commissioned work time,” which means you get paid by us to pursue open source projects that you are interested in. Choose your own adventure! (Just tell us about it)
Please apply through Handshake by September 30th: https://app.joinhandshake.com/jobs/10269859.
Include your GitHub profile in your CV – don’t worry if you don’t have experience with GitHub; this is not disqualifying if you are passionate and want to learn.
The expected pay is $20/hour, and the workload is 5-10 hours per week. Our office is located on the 4th floor of CoDa, so we will meet in a brand-new space.
