Elena Tuzhilina

I was born in Moscow and received my B.Sc and M.Sc degrees at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University. During my undergraduate studies in pure mathematics I have found myself having a growing interest in the connection between real-world scientific problems and mathematics, which motivated me to join my first applied projects in biology and genetics and, subsequently, to apply to the PhD program at Stanford. Currently, I am a 4th-year PhD student at the Department of Statistics advised by Professor Trevor J. Hastie. My scientific interests include machine learning, applied statistics and convex optimization, especially problems related to applications in biology and computer linguistics.
