Student Fellow Frequently Asked Questions

Which project will I work on?

We’re still working on finalizing projects for this summer. We will select fellows and match them to projects considering competencies and interests -- make sure to mention them in your application. In addition, we want fellows who are excited to participate in the program regardless of the project.

Is this a in-person or virtual program? What are my commitments?

The 2023 program will be in-person and requires a full-time commitment (40 hours/week) for the eight weeks from June 26 to September 1, 2023, excluding holidays.  Exceptions include personal emergencies and medical issues. Fellows will be working intensely with their teams throughout the period, participating in Slack discussions,  and attending virtual meetings. You are required to abide by the Stanford Data Science Code of Conduct.

I prefer to work alone rather than in a team.  Can I still apply?

Fellows will be working intensely with their teams throughout the summer. If you aren’t interested in that experience, then this probably isn’t the program for you. However, if you’re shy or want to grow in your ability to work on a data science team, then this could be a great fit for you.

Is there a stipend for participating in this program?

Fellows will receive a stipend of $6,500, with a needs-based supplement (of up to $1,500) for eligible students.

I am an advanced graduate student and have quite a bit of data science experience. I am interested in being a mentor with the program. What should I do?

Stanford Ph.D. students are encouraged to apply for a technical mentor position. Contact us at  ds4socialgood@stanford.edu with questions.
