Computer Science

Rylan Schaeffer

I'm a rising 3rd year Computer Science PhD student advised by Professor Sanmi Koyejo. Previously, I worked on neuroscience-inspired artificial intelligence, but recently pivoted to studying the capabilities and limitations of large generative AI systems and how they might one day interact with society. I spent this summer at Meta's new Generative AI org, working to more accurately assess large language models and predict how well they conform to human preferences. My research spans science, engineering, math & statistics, and relies heavily on diverse mathematical fields including machine learning, probabilistic modeling, high dimensional probability, optimization, and dynamical systems. Before Stanford, I spent time at MIT, Google DeepMind, Harvard, Uber, University College London and UC Davis.
